Safety

Built strong: Permitted as a Class I Landfill, we accept everyday trash, special waste, commercial waste and industrial waste. We do not accept hazardous waste, liquid waste or untreated medical waste.

Protect groundwater: A liner system composed of 7 feet of compacted clay (5 feet of geologic buffer and 2 feet of compacted clay liner) and a geosynthetic membrane protect groundwater by acting as a barrier between waste and the environment. Liquid drainage is collected and sent to an on-site, state-of-the-art pre-treatment system before being discharged to the local waste water treatment plant for final processing.

Protect the air: Special measures are put into place to control dust and windblown litter. A gas collection system controls landfill gas generated by the waste and is routed to a flare system where it is safely destroyed per federal and state regulations.

Monitored continuously: Sophisticated safety equipment and trained personnel monitor all aspects of the landfill and ensure that only nonhazardous materials are disposed of.

Screen for radiation: We conduct load checks for radiation using sensitive instruments, and if radiation is detected, disposal is delayed until inspectors arrive.

Screen for electronic waste: Load checks take place every day to prevent and minimize e-waste disposal.

Exceed standards: The landfill industry is one of the most heavily regulated businesses in the country. Middle Point Landfill meets and/or exceeds all regulatory requirements, obligations and safety standards.

Inspected regularly: The facility is fully permitted and inspected monthly (or more often) by the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).

Protect surface water: Stormwater runoff is collected and contained in retention ponds. Inspections are conducted quarterly, and analysis is done annually. Ponds are also inspected monthly by TDEC during their routine inspections.
